Taking Flow Readings in Remote and Hazardous Areas
In the ideal world, flowmeters would be located at eye-level
in highly visible areas in the plant. In the real world,
however, flowmeters are often located in the most remote,
awkward and downright dangerous locations. By using the
increasingly popular electronic register on your propeller
meter, readings can be made easier, safer and faster.
A typical example is reading a propeller meter in an
underground vault. The employee has a real possibility of
asphyxiation, either from oxygen being displaced or from a
leaking chlorine container; he must use a breathing
apparatus and have stand-by help on site. However, if he
uses an electronic register mounted on the outside of the
enclosed space, he can read the meter in safety, as well as
save time and effort.
Electronic registers use a sensor placed behind the
propeller's drive magnet to transmit a signal to the
remotely-located reader. They usually have a range of output
options, including the ability to interface with SCADA
systems. In addition to overcoming safety problems,
electronic registers also eliminate many of the mechanical
components needed to drive standard, mechanical registers,
an obvious reliability advantage. And with fewer parts, they
create less friction, increasing the range over which the
meter can accurately measure.
